I like St. Patrick's prayer -- it's a good focus for me to think of Christ all around me and in everything I do.

Thank You for taking the time to post this and filling us in on the Ministry you and Steve Reed are involved in. Is there a specific meaning behind the names of the gangs, "MS" and "18's?"

I moved here from Detroit years ago and there were a number of gangs in my neighborhood. Learning that kids were forcibly pulled in and beat into being members of certain gangs both shocked and sickened me. Once in, they were threatened with beatings and worse if they tried to get out of the gang.

I'm not sure what my old neighborhood is like these days but I have added the gang members, families and old neighbors and friends to my prayers.

I perfectly understand the theory of "practice pays off," but I have a hard time putting it into practice :).
I've been mostly keeping up with the daily Bible reading, but then I fall behind a day or two, and then catch back up. Same with any discipline -- daily exercise, prayer, reading for growth/knowledge. My prayer continues to be, "Lord help me be faithful beyond what my self can do."

I think sometimes fasting can be done with things other than food, for example TV, or a hobby, or even work, for someone who is a workaholic.

Great question... Clearly fasting has it roots in the Old Testament and Jesus fasted for 40 days. Jesus gives gives some simple guidelines for the practice in Matt. 6:16-18. It's interesting that although fasting in common and important practice in the early part of the book of Acts there (as far as I know) no mention of fasting in the rest of the New Testament but what seems clear from early church fathers (Ambrose, Origen & Augustine) that the non-jewish church made fasting a regular part of worship. Although it seems that they them moved the day from the normal Jewish days of fasting of Monday and Thursday to Wednesday and Friday.

Did the Apostles and churches fast because they were still following Jewish tradition, or was this fasting part of the new, post-Jewish Gentile movement?
